Ceremony of Carols is a festive collection of poems set to music by Benjamin Britten, a British composer, in 1941. Britten wrote this piece as a kind of retreat from the horrors of the World War, especially the ravages that befell his country. It was originally composed for a three-part treble choir of trained children’s singers. The poetry was written in Early English, Middle English, and Modern English. It tells the story of the coming of the Savior in many terms other than the usual story. The music is simple and childlike, although its sound is clearly British. The work is accompanied by solo harp, a first occurrence at Epiphany.
